Working at Crossword

What we do

Crossword Cybersecurity is a technology commercialisation company focused on the cyber security sector. That means we turn research into reality by covering the entire commercialisation process from paper to product. We examine cyber security research being undertaken by universities across Europe to identify concepts that can meet the needs of our commercial clients. Our specialist product and software development teams then work with our university partners to turn their cutting edge ideas into a commercial product.

In addition, our Crossword Consulting team provide clients with bespoke, tailored consulting services in Cyber Security, Incident Management & Forensics and GDPR & Data Privacy. Our first product, Rizikon, offers organisations a secure, encrypted assurance tool to manage their suppliers and third parties.

About our team

Founded in 2014 by our CEO, Tom Ilube CBE, Crossword Cybersecurity is going from strength to strength and was listed on the London Stock Exchange AIM market in 2018. We are a 30-strong team of friendly, committed and highly skilled individuals located in Richmond, Greater London and Kraków in Poland.

Despite being a relatively new company, Crossword has a wealth of inspiring and experienced individuals at the helm whose combined business acumen and specialist sector knowledge is pretty formidable. Find out more about our board, leadership team and advisers here.

What We Can Offer You

The benefit of experience

The make-up of our team gives us something unique to offer. It’s rare to find such richness of leadership experience in a small organisation and the advantage of our size is that our leadership team are present, accessible and engaged with the whole team. You will get to know them well and our staff tell us time and time again that they find this level of exposure invaluable in developing their own knowledge and business acumen.

Broadening your skills base

Another advantage of small-firm working is the opportunity to ‘get involved’, develop a greater breadth of skills and take your career in new directions. There is no shortage of new projects to get involved in and we actively encourage team members to take innovative ideas and make them happen.

We are keen to support learning both on the job, and alongside it. We have also supported a number of individuals with training and study opportunities which complement their on-the-job learning, for example, gaining certifications in IASME CyberEssentials Plus and ISO27001, and longer term study programmes such as an Msc in Cybersecurity.

Inclusivity & valuing diversity

Our team hails from a diverse range of backgrounds and this is something we really value. Our collective strength is in our individual uniqueness and the range of experiences and ideas we can bring to the table. Our leadership team strive to ensure everyone’s voice is heard and the whole team has an opportunity to contribute.

Our CEO, Tom Ilube, leads by example, combining his passion for science and technology with a desire to improve access opportunities to these subjects. He is the founder of the African Science Academy, Africa’s leading girls only STEM school. He was also the founding Chair of Hammersmith Academy in London, now one of the UK’s most innovative technology schools.

Flexibility & Life-Work balance

At Crossword we are focussed on what you achieve at work, not how long you spend in the office. Late night office working is not part of our culture. While our staff are always busy, we trust them to manage their time responsibly and professionally to get the job done. Presenteeism is not our thing.

We are committed to enabling our staff to work flexibly in whatever ways we can and interests and commitments outside of work are supported and celebrated.

Supportive colleagues

Asking for help and supporting others is celebrated at Crossword. It is one of the 8 ‘Ways of Working’ commitments our Exec Management Team have pledged to uphold. They actively encourage others to follow their example by sharing challenges early and being responsive to requests for support from others.

A great working environment

Both our offices (Richmond and Kraków) are modern and well equipped with kitchen and shower facilities, excellent coffee machines and break out spaces to catch up with colleagues or just get away from your desk. Our office teams link-up ‘live’ by video conference every week to ensure we maintain our one team feel and keep track of developments in the week. The session will also usually include a learning session on a particular topic or project.
